Design series by Spatial Concept 5 reasons why your office should have a breakout zone

Breakout zones are becoming more desirable and popular in the modern workplace because of the benefits it can have on our wellbeing and productivity. Continue reading for 5 reasons why your next office should have a breakout zone.

What is a breakout zone?

A breakout zone is defined as a space that is separate from the formal work area but still within the office. With more casual and comfy settings, employees can utilise this space when they need a break from their desks or hold informal meetings with colleagues. So why should your office have one?

1. It increases employee health and wellbeing

It’s well known that sitting for many hours at the desk in front of the computer screen has negative impacts on our health, both physically and mentally.

Having a breakout zone gives employees a place to take a break when they need to refresh their body and minds. It can reduce stress, promote mobility and improve productivity.

2. It creates an extra workspace

Working from the same spot every day may create a feeling of being stuck, affecting our ability to tackle work tasks efficiently.

Since breakout zones are designed to be multipurpose, employees can temporarily relocate with their laptops if wish to have a change of scene. Users may feel more inspired and creative under a comfortable and relaxed setting.

3. Somewhere to hold informal meetings

Sometimes, discussions with colleagues may not require a formal setting such as a meeting room, but having it at your desk is not ideal either, as it could disturb others. Providing a breakout area with a semi-privacy setting will be ideal.

4. A perfect in-between choice

Breakout zones are the perfect in-between choice for informal meetings, allowing employees to collaborate and brainstorm in a relaxed, casual setting. A variety of settings are essential to provide employees with options.

5. It adapts to changes in the way we work

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, people have adapted to flexible working arrangements such as working from home, breaking away from the rigidity of a traditional office. Although flexibility is favoured by many, employees may face difficulties such as the lack of technological support, so many will have to return to working in the office.

To wrap up…

Breakout zones can provide flexibility within the workplace and more, as being in the office has the benefit of real-life interactions and technical support. Having a space where employees can collaborate or work independently without being confined to a desk can contribute significantly to their success at work.
